چکیده

Dawn, the ninth Discovery mission, is a journey to the main belt asteroids Vesta and Ceres to attempt to understand the building blocks of the solar system and the processes occurring at the solar system s earliest epoch. It does this with a spacecraft that utilizes ion propulsion to reach its targets and to maneuver into orbit about these bodies. It carries a framing camera, a visible and infrared mapping spectrometer, and a gamma ray and neutron detector. The mission has passed its critical design review and is scheduled to be launched in June 2006 with arrival at Vesta in 2011 and Ceres in 2015. 2005 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Dawn Mission to Vesta and Ceres Symbiosis between Terrestrial Observations and Robotic Exploration

The initial exploration of any planetary object requires a careful mission design guided by our knowledge of that object as gained by terrestrial observers. This process is very evident in the development of the Dawn mission to the minor planets 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta. This mission was designed to verify the basaltic nature of Vesta inferred both from its reflectance spectrum and from the composit...

Moon search algorithms for NASA's Dawn Mission to asteroid Vesta

A moon or natural satellite is a celestial body that orbits a planetary body such as a planet, dwarf planet, or an asteroid. Scientists seek understanding the origin and evolution of our solar system by studying moons of these bodies. Additionally, searches for satellites of planetary bodies can be important to protect the safety of a spacecraft as it approaches or orbits a planetary body. If a...

An Image Based Approach to Recovering the Gravitational Field of Asteroids

NASA’s DAWN spacecraft is on a mission to recover the gravity and structure of the asteroids Vesta and Ceres. Current approaches for developing a gravitational map of a celestial body rely upon use of the Deep Space Network of radio telescopes in conjunction with camera measurements for highly accurate tracking of orbiting bodies. Unfortunately, large occluding bodies greatly effect the accurac...

The dynamical environment of Dawn at Vesta

Dawn is the first NASA mission to operate in the vicinity of the two most massive asteroids in the main belt, Ceres and Vesta. This double-rendezvous mission is enabled by the use of low-thrust solar electric propulsion. Dawn will arrive at Vesta in 2011 and will operate in its vicinity for approximately one year. Vesta’s mass and non-spherical shape, coupled with its rotational period, present...

Dawn: A journey in space and time

By successively orbiting both 4 Vesta and I Ceres the Dawn mission directly addresses the long-standing goals of understanding the origin and evolution of the solar system. Ceres and Vesta are two complementary terrestrial protoplanets (one apparently “wet” and the other ”dry”), whose accretion was probably terminated by the formation of Jupiter. They provide a bridge in our understanding betwe...
